The port exports fresh citrus; bulk-frozen citrus juice stored in one of the largest freezer warehouses in the state; cement; and building materials. The port receives timber, salt for water-softening, motor vehicles, and steel sheet and plate. It tranships items by land, sea, air, and space.

It’s the capital of Puerto Plata Province and is famous for its lovely sandy beaches. Puerto Plata is a popular resort destination, as well as a great place to meet Dominican people and shop in local businesses. You can take a funicular to the top of the mountain behind Puerto Plata, where you’ll find a replica of the original Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At the top there’s also a short walking trail with lovely views, a small cave, and a lagoon that’s really more of a pool. Fortaleza San Felipe is an historic fort located beside the main bay in Puerto Plata. In front of the fort there’s a pleasant grassy area that’s perfect for a picnic with views over the water.
