Newport is a seaside city on Aquidneck Island in Newport County, Rhode Island. It lies on Narragansett Bay, about 33 miles (53 km) south‑east of Providence, 20 miles (32 km) south of Fall River, Massachusetts, 74 miles (119 km) south of Boston, and 180 miles (290 km) north‑east of New York City. A classic New England summer resort, it’s renowned for its historic mansions and its deep‑rooted sailing tradition. Newport hosted the first U.S. Open tournaments in both tennis and golf, as well as every America’s Cup challenge from 1930 to 1983. The city is home to Salve Regina University and Naval Station Newport, which includes the United States Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and a key Navy training base. Once a major 18th‑century port, it still features a wealth of Colonial‑era buildings.
Newport is the county town of Newport County, though the county has no governmental role beyond court administration and sheriff and corrections boundaries. It gained prominence as the site of the “Summer White Houses” during the presidencies of Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. The population was 25,163 at the 2020 census.
Surrounded by the Atlantic, Newport typically stays cooler than some coastal cities further north, such as Boston.
